Not much more to add, except:

I stayed 5 months in Madrid, dressed like a spaniard more or less, walked by myself most of the time in various areas of the city - from Chueca to Salamanca to Chamartín to la Latina - and never encountered any type of aggression. The only time it happened was when my parents came to visit at the end of my trip, me and my mom were walking along Gran Via between Fuencarral and Callao at around 5pm with the sidewalks crowded with people, and she felt a hand in her purse for a split second but had it securly held so nothing happened. She had left the zipper open - bad move.

So, it happens, but take the regular precautions and I think you'll do fine.

One last thing, if you're really worried, use one of those security travel belts you can get at travel stores like Rand McNally that go under your waist line, or pant leg. That's where I put my passport and credit cards when I had to take them with me.
