Considering that travel from the U.S. to Europe is down considerably, I've heard that there are many bargains available. Do you think it is inappropriate to ask for a little better price at some of the "more expensive" hostales, considering the economic situation as well as the political one? --CC

Carole Chiaro, one-post-member drliu (ALSO from California by the way... Hmmm.... interesting) asked a similar question earlier this month in the " bartering for hostel/hotel and shopping " thread and pim politely said that "bargaining" was only appropriate at street markets. I'd have to agree with her.

Asking for a price-cut from a half-full (or less) hostel, "more expensive" or not, is kind of like asking the owners to accept half-a-meal that evening because of the discount they might give you. I wouldn't do it. Maybe if you were staying for an entire week it might be permissable to ask for a discount. This, somehow, sounds somewhat reasonable to me.

Yes, you are right. It's simply not done like that in Spain.

When I think back, it is Costa Rica where "deals" can often be struck. It is not uncommon to offer quite a bit less than the quoted rate for a room, apartment or house, especially during the off-season and when traveling with a group. Most rates there, however, are definitely inflated. I really don't see that as the case in Spain. --CC

Most hostals in Spain (and Europe for that matter) have a two- or three-tier rate structure, depending on whether it is low or high season, or something in-between. I suggest staying at a one- or two-star hostal to save money. They are usually quite comfortable, sharing a bath is no big deal, and you save a bunch of money. You will not be hanging out in your room anyway, probably you will be asleep in it, so why pay for a fancy room? Do as the Spanish do: stay at an inexpensive hostal!
